In June 2017, ABO Capital acquired Complexo Escolar Privado Internacional (CEPI), an award-winning school in Benfica, Luanda, as part of its effort to expand access to quality education in Angola. ABO Capital invested in CEPI because its CEO, Zandre Campos, believes education is the foundation of success, and that a quality education system builds skilled workers and creates economic opportunity. CEPI has a long record of academic excellence and regularly takes part in international education competitions. In September 2022, ABO Capital announced its partnership with Maple Bear, a globally renowned Canadian education system that brings bilingual instruction and international academic standards to schools around the world. The program was first rolled out at CEPI for more than 200 students from pre-K to second grade. Today, CEPI operates as Maple Bear Benfica, one of two schools in the Maple Bear Angola network alongside Maple Bear Maianga, which has two campuses, Polo 1 and Polo 2. Together they serve ~2000 students, from early childhood through high school, and two new campuses are under development in Coqueiros and Talatona. HBV and malaria are global health problems that can be prevented. Thanks to the help from Zandre and his team at ABO Capital, the Center for Applied Medical has been assisted in working on the development of hepatitis B vaccines and antimalarial strategies.
Because of the generous support of ABO Capital, Shine On Sierra Leone was able to initiate an Ebola response program that met critical needs of the community. There were 67 children who were orphaned by the virus. With continued support, we will be able to assist these next generation children through our Family Support Program (FSP) and provide needed educational and psychosocial support services, as well as train and equip local social workers to be change agents of support in their communities.
The continued support from ABO Capital has allowed us to provide eye treatment to populations in depressed areas of the world. Since 2014, more than 1,000 people in Angola and Rwanda have benefited from the Barraquer Foundation cataract surgical expeditions.
